Care, Maintenance & Safety Guide

Give your furniture the love it deserves. With the right care, your pieces can stay beautiful and functional for years to come.

Care & Maintenance by Material

Fabric

General Care

  • Vacuum weekly using a soft brush attachment and low suction to prevent dust build-up and preserve the fabric fibers.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth. Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent or stain remover.
  • Fluff, rotate, and flip cushions regularly to maintain shape and comfort.
  • Avoid sitting on sofa arms or backrests to preserve the frame structure.
  • Avoid sitting with damp or dark-coloured clothing, which may cause colour transfer.
  • For non-removable cushions, smooth the surface with your hands and tuck excess fabric into the sides to reduce creases.
  • For tougher or set-in stains, we recommend working with a professional upholstery cleaning service.

Sun Exposure & Heat

Avoid placing fabric furniture in direct sunlight or near heat sources. Prolonged exposure may lead to discolouration or fading.

Fabric Features

Easy Clean
Easy-Clean

Our fabrics are designed to handle life's little messes. From red wine to pen stains, simply use water and a small amount of mild household cleaner for tougher marks.

  • For best results, clean spills immediately.
  • Disclaimer: Cleaning effectiveness will reduce over time. Typically lasts 2-3 years with normal use.
  • Do not machine wash. Engage a professional cleaning service when needed.
Water Repellent
Water-Repellent

The hydrophobic layer helps water bead on the surface instead of soaking in - giving you enough time to wipe with a soft cloth.

  • Disclaimer: Water-repellent effectiveness will reduce over time. Typically lasts 2-3 years with normal use.
  • Do not machine wash. Engage a professional cleaning service when needed.
Pet Friendly
Pet-Friendly

Depending on the fabric, it may be non-toxic (safe for pets and humans), scratch-resistant (tightly woven to withstand claws), or both. Check product details to see which feature applies.

Velvet Care (if applicable)

  • Brush the velvet pile gently and regularly to maintain texture.
  • Avoid placing heavy objects on velvet for long periods.
  • Use a steamer on low heat, steaming in the direction of the pile to release creases.

Genuine Leather

General Care

  • Wipe down regularly with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Use a dedicated leather cleaner for deeper cleaning.
  • For conditioning, use leather protection cream or petroleum jelly (e.g. Vaseline) sparingly to keep the surface supple.

Deep Cleaning

For thorough care or stubborn marks, engage professional leather cleaning services only.

Wood & Veneer

Daily Cleaning

  • Wipe with a damp (not soaking wet) cloth.
  • Follow with a dry cloth to prevent moisture damage.
  • For stains, gently clean with mild soap and warm water.
  • Avoid all chemical-based cleaners.

Care Tips

  • Always use coasters, placemats, or tablecloths to prevent heat and moisture damage.
  • Use felt pads under objects like lamps or vases to avoid scratches.
  • Keep wood dry at all times to prevent warping or cracking.
  • Optionally, you may use paste wax to preserve the wood finish (check product compatibility).

Sunlight & Humidity

  • Keep wood away from direct sunlight to prevent cracking or fading.
  • Maintain moderate humidity levels to avoid warping or shrinking.
  • Avoid placing near radiators or humidifiers.

Chemical & Scratch Exposure

  • Avoid contact with chemicals like nail polish remover, perfumes, or alcohols.
  • Handle sharp objects with care around wood surfaces.

Capiz / Mother of Pearl

Cleaning

  • Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth to maintain its shine and avoid micro-scratches.
  • For light cleaning, use a soft cloth dampened with mild soap and water. Wipe gently and dry immediately.
  • Avoid all chemical or abrasive cleaners, which can damage the delicate surface.

Care Tips

  • Always use coasters, placemats, or decorative mats to protect from scratches, heat, and spills.
  • Wipe spills immediately with a soft, dry cloth to avoid stains or warping.
  • Avoid placing items made from nickel or copper directly on the surface to prevent discolouration - use a protective barrier.

Sunlight & Humidity

  • Keep furniture away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
  • Maintain a cool, dry environment. High humidity can loosen the inlay or warp the structure.

Rattan

Cleaning

  • Dust regularly using a vacuum with an upholstery brush.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to reach tight corners.
  • Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap solution.
  • Wipe spills immediately and dry thoroughly.

Sun Exposure

Avoid placing rattan in direct sunlight or outdoor elements - this causes discolouration and material breakdown.

Safety Tips

1. Anti-Tip Prevention

Unsecured furniture can pose a serious safety risk, particularly in homes with young children.

  • Large and tall pieces (like dressers, cabinets, or bookshelves) should be secured to the wall using anti-tip kits.
  • Installation is strongly advised if an anti-tip kit is included.
  • Note: Ruma does not provide installation for wall anchoring.

2. Installation & Movement

  • Ensure all feet and legs are securely fastened.
  • Lift - don't drag. Dragging furniture may damage the legs or your floor.
  • For rattan pieces, always lift from both ends to avoid stressing the fibers. Do not drag any rattan furniture.
  • Dragging wooden furniture across the floor may damage joints - always lift when moving.

3. Center Support Leg Positioning

Beds & Sofas

Center legs should NOT touch the floor (leave approx. 7mm gap) to allow proper flex and structure.

Cabinets

Center support legs must touch the floor to ensure weight distribution and stability.
