8 Easy And Effective Tips To Style A Bookcase

Bookcases can occupy and fill a sizable amount of room in your house, at which point they take on the centre of attention. They call for our attention. Perhaps that is why they appear so challenging to get "right."

Since they are such a focal point in a room, bookshelves can prove to be interesting and challenging to style, but often the issue is that we overdo it. There's no doubt that it can be frightening. Therefore, without further ado, let's make styling a bookshelf simpler.

Colour Coordination

While looking for books with similar colours is not necessary, try to choose one or two dominating tones to use repeatedly on the shelves of the bookcase. Compared to a kaleidoscope of colours, this will be more pleasant to the sight.

If it appeals to you, for example, you may want to try organising the books on the shelves by colour. Alternatively, you could choose to use a very neutral, monochromatic design.

Don't Overfill It And Have A White Space

In the event that you have an extensive collection of books and sentimental items to showcase, try to narrow it down to just those that you genuinely value. You can then locate another place for the other things.

Mixing your bookshelf up with other ornaments is a good idea, but be sure you allow some white space. Your eyes and brain can only process so much information at once, so when your shelves are filled with several small items, they just interpret it as clutter. You want the items on your bookshelf to be noticed and valued, not overlooked.

Prioritise Balance For An Effective Focal Point

Think about where you want your bookshelves to go in relation to your room's dimensions. It should be the primary stylistic component and carry enough weight to be significant.

In order to simulate built-ins and make the space feel larger, place two similar bookshelves side by side. Alternatively, placing a bookshelf on the opposite side of the television increases the impact of one major focal point in the room.

Have Fun With Depths And Height With A Few Books

Arrange your books both horizontally and vertically on the shelves. Place a few ornamental items in front and a few more towards the back. For instance, you could position a little item in front of a photo frame and lean the image towards the back.

Alternatively, lean a larger and smaller photo on top of one another. For height, include a big bowl or vase. Perhaps stack several books and then place an object on top. Changing the heights and depths adds interest and grabs the viewer's attention.

Anchor Your Bookshelves

Place heavier objects at the bottom shelves, such as:

  • Crates
  • Baskets
  • Stack of large coffee-table books

The heaviest items should be placed on the lowest shelves.

Make It Meaningful

Incorporate at least one or two sentimental items in your collection. Perhaps that is a small work of art or a few picture frames of family or friends. Another possibility is that it's a priceless artefact from a memorable trip or time in your life. You want these items to make you happy since that's where your attention will be drawn.

Include Actual Books

Although it isn't required, use your bookshelf to organise and store all your books together in one space if you want to. Make sure to visually divide the space by stacking some books, placing some flat, and finally leaning some on the shelves. Additionally, incorporate a few additional small trinkets or organic objects for appeal. It adds interest to the area.

Be Unique

Make an effort to be unique. Incorporate a simple bookshelf with just one item on it in the mix. Perhaps group a couple of similar items to create an eye-catching focus arrangement.

For a change, flip your books backwards in the bookshelf to get a soothing monochrome look. Consider placing a plant or other natural object on top. As always, include significant art and natural items you cherish in your display.

Styling A Bookshelf Should Be A Fun Process And Not A Stressful One

Your bookshelf belongs to you. It's not necessary for them to be picture-worthy. Show off the things that bring you joy, and change your displays frequently when necessary. Continue working on them, and they will get to a point that makes you satisfied.
