How To Choose The Perfect Sofa For Your Home?
A) Get A Feel Of Your Home’s Style And Vibe
Before you decide on your living room’s furniture arrangement, you will need to determine how your living room will be used for most of the time. Will it be a chill and casual space for you to relax after work and on the weekends or will it be a multi-functional space where you can entertain your guests and work at the same time?
Once you’ve figured this out, you will have a better understanding on how to arrange your living room furniture suitable for the space. Aside from that, you also need to consider the circulation (the way people move around the space), balance (design symmetry) and emphasis (point of interest/attention in your living room).
If all of these seem overwhelming, check out the following living room furniture arrangements to get a brief idea and put
- Symmetrical and parallel
- Asymmetrical and parallel
- L-shaped
- Box-shaped
B) Think Of The Functionality You Expect From The Sofa
What you’re using the sofa for is really important. For example, is this a formal sitting room where you’ll sit down for drinks when people come over? Or is this the room where you’ll watch TV every day? Will it be mainly for the kids where they’ll have friends over and eat/drink on it?
Each one of the above situations dictates a different style of sofa. Formal can be less comfortable, more structured, more upright. TV watching sofas need to be cushier; something you can sink into and lay around on. And sofas for kids need to take more wear and tear as we all know that most teens do not care about sofa maintenance.
C) Get To Know The Ideal Width And Height Of Your Sofa
This living room furniture arrangement is similar to the above but differs in terms of the furniture used. Put simply, you can still arrange your furniture to mirror each other but it will appear asymmetrical due to the use of different furniture.
For example, you can have a single-seater sofa and 2-seater sofa on one side, and a 3-seater sofa on the other, separated by a coffee table. You can even arrange two single-seater sofas opposite a 2-seater sofa with a coffee table in the centre. As a result, your living room will appear asymmetrical but multi-functional at the same time.
D) Choose The Right Cushion Inserts
There are loads of different types of cushion inserts and each of them will have a huge impact on not only how comfortable the sofa is, but how it looks and what maintenance is involved in looking after them.
The three types are:
- Feather Filled Cushions
This type of sofa cushion is usually filled with duck feather and is the softest option you can go for. While feather fill is super cushy, it will sag over time, and it can make your sofa cushions look a little lumpy. You’ll also need to regularly fluff, punch and plump up the cushions so they retain their shape.
- Foam-Filled Cushions
These are the firmest options of the lot. A foam-fill cushion will bounce back to its original shape right away and will maintain firmness quite well over time. Foam is very low maintenance, but the downside is that you won’t sink into them as they don’t feel as soft as feather.
- Foam Wrapped with Feather
This is the best of both worlds where the cushion core is made of foam, so you get that sense of support and a little firmness. However, you have the bonus of that foam core being wrapped in a layer of duck feathers. This means there is some light maintenance in terms of fluffing or flipping, but not much. The sagging over time is minimal and you can lay on them for hours in ultimate comfort.
What are the benefits of single seater sofa?
1) A Longer Lifespan
For the longevity of the sofa, you can move around the multiple cushions to extend the life. If a sofa’s cushion starts to lose its shape, flip it over, or switch placement to level the seating field. It’s a benefit similar to flipping a mattress – but much easier when it’s a single seater cushion!
2) Enjoy The Luxury Of Personal Space
With a single cushion sofa, you have your own boundary and will have an effective personal space because of it. This can be thought of as a personal luxury – think of how often you’ll need to share those two or three seater sofas with a person that doesn’t have a sense of boundaries!
3) Have Room For More Design Creativity
For people who like to customize their living space, a single seater sofa allows more customization and personalization in terms of positioning and flexibility. You can fill in empty spots or spaces of your living space effectively and luxuriously with just a single seater sofa!
